Wood chopping event at the Ekka, 1907
Cut clean through, wood chopping competition at the Exhibition, 1907. Image no. APO-047-0001-0026 was chosen as image of the week beginning 10 August 2009, to mark Ekka week in Brisbane.
The Ekka holds a special place in the hearts of Queenslanders. More correctly known as the Royal Queensland Show, these 10 days in August are a favourite event in Queensland's social calendar. The Ekka story and more images can be found in the Features section of Picture Queensland.
Paronella Park, Queensland, 1948
'Paronella Park' Castle at Mena Creek, near Innisfail. The castle was designed and built by Spanish immigrant Jose Paronella in the 1930s and displays a Spanish influence in its architectural design. The castle is constructed from concrete, reinforced with old railway track. The concrete was then covered with a plaster made from clay and cement, which was put on by hand. In 1935, the park was officially opened to the public. Paronella Park was chosen as one of the Q150 Queensland icons.

Image no. 52433 was image of the week beginning 20 July 2009. Hollywood actress Mary Maguire was Brisbane girl Peggy Maguire who was born in Melbourne on 22 February 1919. She was only 16 when Charles Chauvel cast her in his early epic Heritage (1935). The following year, having changed her name to Mary, she appeared in The Flying Doctor (1936) after which she left for Hollywood.
Mary appeared in several Hollywood films in 1937 before moving to Britain for two years. Her last movie was This was Paris in 1942. She died in Longbeach, California, USA on 18 May 1974, aged 55.
Qantas hangar and biplane at Charleville airport, ca. 1930
Charleville was one of the first airports used by Qantas to fly paying passengers in 1922. Australia's renowned international airline took passengers on its first scheduled flight from Charleville to Cloncurry on 2 November 1922.
An 84-year-old outback pioneer named Alexander Kennedy became the first Qantas passenger on the scheduled flight, using Ticket No. 1. His flight, on 2 November 1922, was on the Longreach-Winton-McKinlay-Cloncurry section of the inaugural mail service from Charleville to Cloncurry.
Story Bridge, 1939
Construction is almost completed on the Story Bridge, Brisbane, October 1939.
Brisbane's most iconic and important bridge, constructed by contractors Evans Deakin-Hornibrook, was opened in July 1940 and was named after John Douglas Story, a prominent public servant. The Story Bridge is the largest steel bridge designed, fabricated and constructed in Australia by Australians. Dr. John Bradfield was consulting engineer. The Story Bridge was chosen by Queenslanders in the Q150 voting as the most iconic structure and engineering feat in Queensland.

Doctor O'Leary of the Royal Flying Doctor Service makes his patient comfortable for the flight to Mt. Isa. He is attending to an injured stockman in Outback Queensland in 1969.

The Royal Flying Doctor service was founded by Reverend John Flynn in 1928 to administer a missionary doctor to the needs of the men and women scattered between Wyndham and Cloncurry, Darwin and Maree and was voted as a Queensland Q150 icon this year.

Bert Hinkler had completed a solo flight from London to Brisbane in his Avro Avian biplane G-EBOV, landing at Ascot racecourse in Brisbane, Australia in 1928.

Rosenstengel furniture
Edmund Rosenstengel (1887-1962) was a cabinet-maker whose best known public commissions included the invitation to furnish a bedroom at Government House, Brisbane, for the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934, and the creation of a jewel case intended for the (then) Duchess of York.

A cyanotype (blue print) photograph, a popular process during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shows a view across wharf buildings and other properties on the city side of the Brisbane River, towards flooded West End and the remains of the Victoria Bridge.

Fourex poster
This Fourex advertisement appeared in a souvenir to commemorate the opening of the enlarged Victoria Park Golf Club house in Brisbane in 1939. Victoria Park Golf Club is still trading today.
Fourex beer has been an icon of Queensland for more than 100 years, with the first lager being brewed in 1889. The brewery, known as Castlemaine Brewery, is still operating from the premises in Milton Road, Brisbane.

Alexander Zahmel and this brother Charles, of Mia Mia, took up adjoining blocks in the Parish of Mia Mia in early December 1899. A horse drawn wagon laden with sugar cane stands in front of the high set house.
