Greenmount Homestead, Mackay
Historic Greenmount Homestead, about five kilometres west of Walkerston, is one of Mackay's most valued heritage attractions. Greenmount was named by Captain John Mackay in 1862 when he camped on site, the first European to do so. Fifty years later in 1912, settler Albert Cook bought the land to breed cattle. He built Greenmount Homestead in 1915. Albert Cook and his wife Dorothy were the first permanent residents on the historic property. Mindful of the historical significance of the homestead, Dorothy Cook gave the house and its original contents and the land on which it is situated to the Mackay community.
