Story Bridge construction | Nicholson Family album | Archer Family album
The State Library of Queensland's John Oxley Library includes a marvellous collection of unique photograph albums. These cover a vast range of subjects recording the development and progress of Queensland, including:
- Mount Morgan mining
- the tiger farm at Toombul
- an amateur photographer’s work at Blackall
- an album kept by Governor Chelmsford’s private secretary.
Picture Queensland features a selection from many albums, copied in colour to highlight the original format. Some of these albums have not been viewed before and were only available on request at the State Library. Now they can be viewed online by anyone, anywhere in the world.
Story Bridge construction
The Story Bridge in Brisbane was built to span the Brisbane River from the city to Kangaroo Point. It was named in honour of J. D. Story, the Public Service Commissioner. Design of the bridge began in early January 1934. The Bridge Board elected Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield as the consulting engineer. The construction of the cantilever bridge began in 1935 and was completed and opened to traffic in July 1940. The length of bridge, including the approaches, is 1375 m. More than 95% of the steel was manufactured in Australia and the bridge was constructed by Evans, Deakin-Hornibrook Construction Co. Pty Ltd.

The Nicholson family album
John and Mary Nicholson’s album is a fascinating record of a family establishing a farm at Grovely in the early 1860s. The album shows the plan of the house they built and their gardening efforts in a new environment.

The Archer family album
