Features
Periodically, Picture Queensland features special highlights from the photographic collection of the John Oxley Library. These include:
Queensland authors
Some of Autralia’s most admired novelists, poets and dramatists of the 19th and early 20th centuries have come from Queensland. This feature highlights three famous Queensland authors represented in the State Library of Queensland’s collections.
Photographic albums
The John Oxley Library has a large selection of photograph albums and Picture Queensland features a selection from many of these, which have been copied in colour to highlight the original format. Some of these albums have not been viewed before and were only available on request at the State Library.
Gale collection
The Ron and Ngaire Gale collection is a major feature of our site. The Gales were photo journalists who worked in Northern and Western Queensland during the 1980s.
Queensland real estate maps
This feature illustrates some of the State Library of Queensland's extensive, unique and valuable series of original maps and plans created by real estate firms. The collection, including more than a thousand maps ranging in date from the 1850s to the mid 1900s, covers areas throughout Queensland, but is predominantly from Brisbane.
The Sunday Sun collection
The John Oxley Library holds a very large collection of negatives called the Sunday Sun Collection. This collection encompasses the stable of newspapers including the Truth (1900 – 1960), Sunday Truth (1960 – 1971), and Sunday Sun (1971 – 1992). The images range from the glass negatives of the 1920s up to the celluloid negatives of the 1970s.
