Hinchinbrook Shire Library
The Hinchinbrook Shire is located in North Queensland between Townsville and Cairns. The Library serves a shire population of 12,500 with 7,600 library members.
Hinchinbrook Shire Library values its role in maintaining local history resources for the community.
The local history collection includes:
- paper and microfilm copies of the Herbert River Express 1907 – present
- vertical files
- histories of local schools, churches and other organisations
- works about the Hinchinbrook/North Queensland district
- microforms of births, deaths and marriages
- Post Office records and regional gazetteers and
- ephemera and photographs
The local history role was expanded in 1999 when the Library established the Kennedy Regiment Library after the historical collection of the 31st Battalion Association was bequeathed to the Library by Mr Bob Burla. Now the Hinchinbrook Library provides public access to numerous items belonging to the Kennedy Regiment Library including hundreds of photographs.
Digitisation of the local history images was partly achieved through a State Library of Queensland Innovations Grant in 1998/99 with approximately 1,410 images now available on CD Rom. These images, however, are not available online. The Picture Queensland Outreach project provided the opportunity to expand upon this and begin the digitisation of Kennedy Regiment Library images.

The Kennedy Regiment was originally geographically defined around the Townsville/Charters Towers area and later the 31st Battalion was formed drawing on men from the additional areas of Bowen and Ingham. Over the history of the Regiment, which dates from 1886, documents and images have been collected and donated to record its history. Much of the history is best portrayed through the images that are held in the collection. The images portray Battalion activities both in Australia and abroad and follow the history of the Battalion through its various stages. Copying images for publication or commercial use is not permitted without written consent. Print copies of images may be obtained by contacting the Hinchinbrook Library. Contact details:
