Standards and guidelines

The State Library of Queensland's Picture Queensland team has developed standards and guidelines for digitisation. These ensure consistency and interoperability across both State Library’s digital collections and between State Library and other organisations, in particular PictureAustralia (new window http://www.pictureaustralia.org/).

Documents are available on State Library's website - Policies, standards and protocols.

Although these standards and guidelines were developed to meet the State Library’s needs, other Queensland cultural heritage workers face similar issues. These documents are provided so that organisations, including Queensland public libraries, can decide if they are relevant and of interest to them in creating and managing their own digital collections.

When indexing, we are conscious that clients cannot browse the physical photographs. Client access is entirely dependent upon the words that we use to describe what is in the photograph as well as what it is about. We make every effort to index our photographs for maximum discovery and access.

The State Library uses the Dublin Core schema to describe digital images.

The State Library aims to minimise any offence caused by giving notice that this site contains Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander material and information that may be culturally sensitive to some individuals and communities. Users of this site and contributors to it are referred to the State Library’s Protocols for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections [new window Document in PDF format 126kb] and requested to consult with relevant individuals, family groups, and/or communities prior to digitising images.
