Displaying the images

The State Library of Queensland manages scanning according to the standards detailed in State Library of Queensland Digital Standard 2 – Digital capture, format and preservation [new window 344 kb Word Document ]. The standard states that State Library will produce a set of four digital files for each image:

  1. a quality TIFF “master” image from which all other images are created.
  2. a JPEG thumbnail image - a small image designed to download quickly and provide a quick view of the larger image. Thumbnails are 150 pixels along their longest side. Clicking on a thumbnail will display a description and the larger preview mage.
  3. a JPEG preview image - the default image size designed to display on most monitors whatever the resolution. They are 500 pixels along their longest side.
  4. a large JPEG reference image - the largest sized image and consequently, the largest file size. These images are provided for clients who want to check images in more detail than that provided in the preview image. They are 1000 pixels along their longest side. They will take longer to download and, depending on you screen resolution, may require horizontal and vertical scrolling.

The amount of post scan editing is kept to a minimum. The only editing of the image is adjustments to brightness and contrast plus the inclusion of an ownership tag. Occasionally images are cropped (only when required). This basic editing complies with traditional photographic procedures and preserves the integrity of the original and the moral rights of the photographer.
